Cancelled registration: transporting your car
Moving a deregistered car in Auckland? Confirm the entry certifier, vehicle records and receiving arrangements before booking transport for re-registration.
If your car’s New Zealand registration has been cancelled, contact an entry certifier before booking transport. NZTA’s standard re-registration process directs owners to arrange towing or transport to the certifier. Confirm the right site, appointment and required evidence first, so the vehicle arrives where it can be received for the agreed work.
This guide covers booked delivery of previously NZ-registered light vehicles with a gross vehicle mass of no more than 3,500 kg. Different vehicle categories or import histories need their own requirements checked with NZTA and the certifier.
Confirm that registration has been cancelled
An expired vehicle licence, often called rego, and cancelled registration involve different steps. If you only know that the car has “no rego”, establish its registration status before asking for a re-registration appointment. The expired WoF and rego guide covers vehicles that remain registered.
NZTA’s re-registration guidance explains the process for a previously registered light vehicle. A routine WoF booking does not cover the whole re-registration process. Treat the inspection booking and the vehicle’s physical delivery as two arrangements to confirm.
Choose an entry-certification site before the tow
Use NZTA’s entry-certification directory to find an inspection organisation and confirm a suitable site for your vehicle type. Ask the site directly:
- Do you handle re-registration of this previously NZ-registered vehicle?
- What vehicle details and documents should I send before you accept the booking?
- What is the exact delivery address, entrance and receiving time?
- Who should the transporter contact on arrival, and must I attend?
A familiar brand or nearby WoF station is not enough to confirm that the required inspection is available at that address. Keep the site’s reply with your booking details. If the transporter and certifier give different time windows, resolve them before collection.
Check the records before moving the car
NZTA requires evidence that the vehicle was previously registered in New Zealand and that you are entitled to re-register it. Ask the certifier which evidence they will accept in your circumstances. Existing registration papers, purchase records and VIN or chassis details can help you explain what you have; the certifier decides whether it is sufficient.
Prepare a short record for that conversation:
- Registration status and how it was confirmed.
- Make, model, year and available vehicle identifiers.
- Documents you hold and any gaps you already know about.
- Known damage, deterioration or modifications to discuss before repairs.
- The certifier’s requested next step before delivery.
Do not treat a seller’s assurance or possession of old plates as confirmation that the paperwork is complete. If evidence is missing, settle the next step with the certifier before paying for a move that depends on the booking being accepted.
Give the transporter a receiving plan
Once the site confirms the appointment, pass on the destination contact, delivery window and booking reference. Tell the operator whether the car has keys, whether its movement and steering have been checked, and about any known damage or access restriction. Unknown details should stay marked as unknown.
Ask the certifier how keys and documents should be handed over. Confirm who will be present at pickup and delivery, and whether the owner needs to attend separately. The vehicle transport pickup checklist covers the general collection arrangements without duplicating the certification paperwork.
After the inspection
Delivery does not guarantee certification or permission to drive away. Under NZTA’s process, certification is followed by registration and licensing; the appropriate plates, labels and any required road user charges must be in place before road use. Ask the certifier what remains outstanding for your vehicle. Known structural damage, deterioration or modifications may need specialist certification, so discuss them before arranging repairs.
If the car will need another transport journey, confirm its condition, release time and next receiving address before booking that move.
Request a transport quote
For Drive1 vehicle transport, send the pickup address, confirmed certification site, vehicle details and appointment window through the quote form, or call 021 0289 7845. Add any outstanding receiving arrangements to the enquiry so they can be resolved before collection.
